All dance entries will compete on stage in the auditorium. Any of the categories listed may be entered by Soloists, Duets/Trios and Teams with the exception of Productions category. 3 members may enter in the Team Category or as a Trio.
Acro - Routine that includes 50% gymnastics and 50% dance.
Ballet – Routine consisting of classical ballet technique. No pointe shoes allowed.
Character - Routine interpreting (Acting and Dancing) a character through any style of dance. While dance technique is always important, the character aspect should be a priority in this category.
Clogging – Routine consisting of clogging technique.
Contemporary – Routine that interprets the music and portrays emotions using a combination of lyrical, modern and jazz technique.
Contemporary Ballet - Routine consisting of ballet, lyrical and/or modern technique. Ballet flats or pointe shoes can be used.
Dance Student Choreography - Routine must be completely choreographed by the student. This includes music and costume.
Hip-Hop – Routine consisting of hip-hop, funk or street style dance.
Jazz – Routine to up-beat music and using jazz technique..
Lyrical – Routine that interprets the music and portrays emotions and uses a combination of ballet and jazz technique. Fluidity and lines are considered as well as balance and control.
Musical Theater - Routine interpreting (Acting and Dancing) a song from a "Broadway" or movie musical through any style of dance. While dance technique is always important, the theatrical aspect should be a priority in this category.
Open – Routine consisting of a combination of different dance styles, or one that does not fall under any other category.
Pointe – Routine consisting of ballet/pointe technique. Pointe shoes required.
Pom – Routine consisting of pom and is judged on precision and dance technique with poms..
Production (TEAM ONLY - must be 18 or more dancers) – Large group routine which allows any dance performance category or combination of dance performance categories or dance styles.
Prop - Routine that also incorporates a prop. Prop must be used as part of the dance. A prop sitting on stage does not qualify.
Singing or Song & Dance - (this is not included in the Dance High Point) – May be a routine that is strictly singing or includes singing and dancing. No lead vocals allowed in the music. Dancing is not required.
Tap – Routine consisting of tap technique and tap work. Tap sounds are not permitted in music.
GYMNASTICS IN ROUTINES
Limit of 3 gymnastics/acrobatic tricks in a routine except for Acro, Gymnastics, Open, Theatrical Novelty, and Production. A round-off back handspring is considered one trick. Splits, illusions and handstands are not considered gymnastics.
